Chuck and Tailstock - Recommended Maximum Pressure

This document shows the maximum recommended pressures for the SL and ST chucks and tailstock. Do not increase the pressure higher than what is recommended in this table.

Type psi Bar
5" Chuck 330 23
6" Chuck 330 23
8" Chuck, 2" Bore 330 23
8" Chuck, 2.5" Bore 260 18
10" Chuck 330 23
12" Chuck, 3" Bore 400 28
12" Chuck, 4" Bore 250 17
15" Chuck 340 23
18" Chuck 300 21
Tailstock 400 28

To adjust the pressure, turn the adjustment knob. The lathe can have two adjustment knobs. One knob is for the primary chuck. The other knob is for a tailstock or secondary chuck.

These differences change the recommended maximum pressure between 300-400 psi:

  • different type of chuck
  • different bar stock material
