VF-3/4 - Y-Axis Way Cover - Rear - Replacement - Introduction

This procedure tells you how to replace the rear way cover for the Y-Axis.

Machine Compatibility

Do this procedure for VF-3 and VF-4 machines made between 1 January, 1992 and 1 January, 2003.

Center punch
#21 drill bit
10-32 tap

VF-3/4 - Y-Axis Way Cover - Rear - Removal

Step 1

Clean the rear Y-Axis way cover.
Jog the Y Axis to the end of travel in the negative (-) direction.
Jog the Z Axis to the end of travel in the positive (+) direction.
Power off and then Lockout/Tagout the main circuit breaker.

Remove the screws [1] from the front of the way cover.

Remove the screws from the wiper assembly [2] for the way cover.

Remove the way cover assembly [3].

Step 2

Remove the guide-wheel assemblies for the Y-Axis.

Discard the assemblies.

VF-3/4 - Y-Axis Way Cover - Rear - Installation

Step 1

Remove the wiper assembly from the way cover.

Attach the wiper assembly [1] to the column.

note: Install the (2) corner screws first.

Locate the (2) lowest holes [2] on the flange of the wiper assembly.

Put a circle mark [3] on the casting through the hole on each side of the wiper assembly.

Step 2

Remove the wiper assembly from the casting.

Make a starting mark [1] in each of the (2) marked locations.

Drill a 10-32 x 3/4" (19 mm) hole into each location.

Tap the holes with a #10-32 tap [3].

caution: Do not let chips or debris to fall onto the ballscrew, ballscrew motor, or guide rail areas.

Step 3

Clean the surface of the column where you will attach the way cover.

Attach the wiper assembly to the way-cover assembly.

Attach the rear gasket [2] and the wiper assembly [1] to the column.

Step 4

Push the way cover [1] toward the rear of the machine.

Push the way cover until you can touch the mounting pads [2] for the guide-wheel assemblies.

Install the guide wheel assemblies [3].

Extend and retract the way cover to make sure the way cover moves smoothly.

Step 5

Clean the surface of the saddle where you will attach the way cover.

Attach a way-cover gasket [1] and the way-cover assembly [2] to the saddle.

Be aware: Many service and repair procedures should be done only by authorized personnel. The service technicians at your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) have the training, experience, and are certified to do these tasks safely and correctly. You should not do machine repair or service procedures unless you are qualified and knowledgeable about the processes.
