VMC - Umbrella Tool Changer - Set Parameter 64 - Z-Axis Tool Change Offset

This procedure tells you how to set Parameter 64. This parameter sets the height of the spindle during a tool change.

Step 1

Push Zero Return then All.

HANDLE JOG the X and Y Axes until the center of the table is under the spindle.
Go to MDI mode. Push ATC FWD.
Push EMERGENCY STOP immediately after the door to the umbrella tool changer opens.

Put an empty toolholder in the pocket adjacent to the spindle.

Step 2

Put a 0.0005" indicator and magnetic base on the machine table. Put the tip [1] of the indicator on the bottom of the toolholder. Set the indicator to 0.

Slide the magnetic base toward the spindle. Do not let anything touch the tip [1] of the indicator.

Remove the toolholder from the umbrella tool changer pocket.

Release EMERGENCY STOP.
Push RECOVER. Follow the on-screen prompts.

Put the toolholder into the spindle.

Step 3

Slide the indicator under the spindle. Do not let anything touch the tip of the indicator.

HANDLE JOG the Z Axis up or down until the indicator goes back to zero.
note: This puts toolholder at the same height in the spindle as in the umbrella pocket.

Step 4

Record the MACHINE Z Position value [1].

Multiply the MACHINE Z Position value by the value in Parameter 33 Z RATIO (STEPS/UNIT).

note: The value of Parameter 33 Z RATIO (STEPS/UNIT) is not the same for each machine.

In this example the value of Parameter 33 Z RATIO (STEPS/UNIT) is 554872 [2].

(Z position value) x (Z Ratio) = Calculated value

-0.0093 x 554872 = -5160

Step 5

Push EMERGENCY STOP.

Change Setting 7 to OFF.

If the calculated value is negative, add the absolute value to Parameter 64 [1]. If the calculated value is positive, subtract the value from Parameter 64 [1].

Release the EMERGENCY STOP.
Push RESET.

Step 6

Push ZERO RETURN, Z, then SINGLE. This applies the new value of Parameter 64.

Push 5% RAPID, ZERO RETURN, Z, then HOME G28.

The Z Axis moves to the tool change height. If the tool change height is correct, the indicator goes back to zero.

If the indicator does not go back to zero, do this procedure again.

Change Setting 7 to ON.

Conclusion

Make sure Parameter 257 is correct. Refer to VMC - Umbrella Tool Changer - Set Parameter 257 - Spindle Orientation Offset.

Do some tool changes to make sure the tool changer operates correctly.

Push OFFSET one or two times to go to the TOOL OFFSET page. Set the H(LENGTH) values again.
