Lathe - ST-30/30Y Big Bore, ST-35/35Y - Spindle Liner Kit - Installation - Introduction

The spindle liner kit for the ST-30/30Y Big Bore and ST-35/ST-35Y lathe gives you (4) options for spindle liners. Speak to the Haas Applications department to choose the best liner configuration to use. Refer to Spindle Liner Kit Reference Table for information on additional replacement parts.
  • PVC liner insert [1] with 3.068" (77.93 mm) inner diameter (ID)
  • Steel liner insert [2] with 3.188" (80.98 mm) ID
  • Alternate bar guide disks [3] with a 1" ID pre-bored and spacers [4]. The outer diameter for both is 3.50" (88.90 mm).
  • Blank bar guide disks [5] that have not been pre-bored. The outer diameter is 3.50" (88.90 mm).
Safety Notes
Caution: When you do maintenance or repair on CNC machines and their components, you must always follow basic safety precautions. This decreases the risk of injury and mechanical damage.

Do these steps before you do work in the machine or in the control cabinet:
  • Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position.
  • Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag. Always follow lock-out procedures in accordance to local government rules.
  • After turning off the machine, wait at least 5 minutes before working in the control cabinet, to allow power to dissipate. Wait for the voltage indicator LED on the vector drive to go off completely.
  • Always turn off the main air supply when you work on any part of the pneumatic system.
  • Make sure to rest the spindle head on a block of wood when work is done on a vertical axis. This will prevent any unintended movement that could result in the axis falling.
  • Never alter any safety circuits on the machine.
You should not do machine repair or service procedures unless you are qualified and knowledgeable about the processes. Serious damage to the machine components can result in costly repairs. The service technicians at your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) have the training and experience, and are certified to do these tasks safely and correctly. The repair and service work performed by your HFO is protected with a limited warranty.
danger: Some service procedures can be dangerous or life-threatening. DO NOT attempt a procedure that you do not fully understand. If you have any doubts about doing a procedure contact your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) and schedule a service visit.

Bore (11) bar guide disks for your bar stock (dimension “X” in the illustration). Chamfer the I.D. of the bar guide disk on one side as shown. The chamfer must face the bar as it is loaded.

note: The liner kit contains (11) bar guide disks pre-bored for 1" bars.

Step 1

Push POWER OFF. Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position. Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag.

Step 2

If the Bar Feeder is installed, use the height adjustment handle to lower the transfer tray.

note: For clarity, the illustrations do not show the bar feeder. Do not remove the Bar Feeder to do this procedure.
Remove the bore cover [1] from the hydraulic union.

Keep the bore cover. You must install it if you later remove spindle liners from the lathe.

note: Your bore cover may be different than the bore cover in this illustration.
If the machine has a Samchully union, remove the (2) set screws [2].

Step 3

Apply grease to the o-rings [1] for the SPINDLE LINER [F]. Insert the SPINDLE LINER [F] into the spindle through the hydraulic union. Align the notches in the SPINDLE LINER [F] with the tapped holes in the switch plate.

note: In LMC unions, the larger-diameter o-ring touches the union. In Samchully unions and Kitagawa unions, the smaller-diameter-ring touches the union.
Apply removable blue thread-locking compound to the screws [2] for the RING [E]. Install the RING [E] over the SPINDLE LINER [F]. The liner kit includes these screws:
  • (2) M6 x 20 mm screws. Use these for LMC unions.
  • (2) M5 x 45 mm screws. Use these for Kitagawa unions.
  • (2) M6 x 40 mm screws. Use these for Samchully unions.

The spindle liner kit gives you (4) options for spindle liners:

  • PVC LINER INSERT [H] with 3.068" (77.93 mm) inner diameter (ID)
  • Steel LINER INSERT [G] with 3.188" (80.98 mm) ID
  • Alternate (10) SPACERS [A] with a 1" ID pre-bored and (11) DISKS [D]. Make sure the chamfered side [3] of each bar guide disk faces the bar-feeder-end of the draw tube.
  • Blank DISKS [B] that have not been pre-bored. The outer diameter is 3.50" (88.90 mm)

Turn the NUT [C] to install it into the end of the SPINDLE LINER [H].

Be aware: Many service and repair procedures should be done only by authorized personnel. The service technicians at your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) have the training, experience, and are certified to do these tasks safely and correctly. You should not do machine repair or service procedures unless you are qualified and knowledgeable about the processes.

Danger: Some service procedures can be dangerous or life-threatening. DO NOT attempt a procedure that you do not completely understand. Contact your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) and schedule a service technician visit if you have any doubts about doing a procedure.
