Enclosure Exhaust - Introduction

The Enclosure Exhaust features include:
  • A 600 CFM fan to remove heavy coolant mist from inside the machine enclosure for a cleaner working environment.
  • A dual mesh filter slides out for inspection and cleaning. Easily clean the filters with a solution of soap and water.
  • A sensor that tells the operator when the filters are dirty and need cleaning.
  • Automatic operation with the spindle fan. It starts when the spindle fan starts. It stops when the spindle fan stops.
  • A 10" diameter duct connection that lets you add optional ducting to the shop duct system. The kit does not include ducting.
Safety Notes
Caution: When you do maintenance or repair on CNC machines and their components, you must always follow basic safety precautions. This decreases the risk of injury and mechanical damage.

Do these steps before you do work in the machine or in the control cabinet:
  • Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position.
  • Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag. Always follow lock-out procedures in accordance to local government rules.
  • After turning off the machine, wait at least 5 minutes before working in the control cabinet, to allow power to dissipate. Wait for the voltage indicator LED on the vector drive to go off completely.
  • Always turn off the main air supply when you work on any part of the pneumatic system.
  • Make sure to rest the spindle head on a block of wood when work is done on a vertical axis. This will prevent any unintended movement that could result in the axis falling.
  • Never alter any safety circuits on the machine.
You should not do machine repair or service procedures unless you are qualified and knowledgeable about the processes. Serious damage to the machine components can result in costly repairs. The service technicians at your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) have the training and experience, and are certified to do these tasks safely and correctly. The repair and service work performed by your HFO is protected with a limited warranty.
danger: Some service procedures can be dangerous or life-threatening. DO NOT attempt a procedure that you do not fully understand. If you have any doubts about doing a procedure contact your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) and schedule a service visit.

Machine Compatibility

You can install the Enclosure Exhaust on machines that have the necessary cutout. The cutout is on top of the machine enclosure. These machines have the necessary cutout:
  1. EC-500/1600, VF-1 thru VF-5, VM-2/3 made after May 1, 2015.
  2. ST-20/25/30/35, DS-30 made after June 1, 2015.
  3. ST-10, VF-6 thru VF-12, Mini Mill, Super Mini Mill made after August 1, 2015.
  4. ST-40/45/50/55, DT-1, DM-1 made after September 1, 2015.
  5. EC-400 made after December 1, 2015.
For all other machines:
  • You must use the cutout template to cut out the Enclosure Exhaust hole pattern. This is necessary for correct installation.
  • The "DIRTY FILTER" control warning is not available.

Templates

Some machines do not have the necessary cutout. For these machines, use this template.

On the top of the machine enclosure, measure the dimensions [A] from the front of the machine and [B] from the right side of the machine. Mark the center [C]:
  • A - 9.5" (24.1 cm).
  • B - 8.5" (21.6 cm).
note: For larger machines, be sure to put the cutout nearer to the work area.
Measure the dimensions [D], [E], and [F]:
  • D - Ø6.50" (16.5 cm).
  • E - Ø9.843" (25.0 cm).
  • F - 4X Ø0.375" (9.5 mm).
Cut the (1) large hole [D] and the (4) small holes [F].
note: For an HMC, make the cutout above the machine enclosure, behind the operator's door.
Electrical Schematic

Enclosure Exhaust - Installation

Step 1

Push POWER OFF. Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position. Lock the main circuit breaker. Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag.

Step 2

Remove the (4) nuts and the (4) washers [2] in the machine. Remove the cover plate [1] from the top of the machine enclosure.

Lathe models ST-40 and larger [3] have two layers of sheet metal on the ceiling of the machine. Remove the bottom cover [5] in the machine. Remove the cover [6] on the top of the machine.

Put the ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A] on the top of the machine enclosure.

note: Make sure the Haas logo on the ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A] points to the front of the machine. This position gives the best access to the filters [7] in the ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A].

Install the (4) WASHER [D] and the (4) NUT [E] to the standoffs for the ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A]. For lathe models ST-40 and larger [3], install the (4) WASHERS [D] and the (4) NUTS [E] between the two layers of sheet metal.

Step 3

Install the cable [1] from the ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A] to the control cabinet.

Install the (4) CABLE TIE CLAMP [F] to the top of the enclosure.

Use (4) CABLE TIES [G] to attach the cable [1] to the CABLE TIE CLAMP [F].

Step 4

Do this step for machines that have the Next Generation Control:

Disconnect the spindle fan cable [1] from P32 on the I/O PCB.

Connect the 3-pin connector [2] of the cable [3] from the ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A] to P32 on the I/O PCB.

Connect the spindle fan cable [1] to the 3-pin female connector [4] of the cable [3].

Find the 2-pin connector [5] that has the label ENCLOSURE VAC SWITCH on the cable [3]. Connect that connector [5] to the 2-pin connector [6] from P34 on the I/O PCB.

Step 5

Do this step for a VMC or a lathe that has the Classic Haas Control:

Disconnect the 300A cable [1] from P41 on the I/O PCB.

Connect the 3-pin connector [2] of the cable [3] from the ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A] to P41 on the I/O PCB.

Connect the 300A cable [1] to the 3-pin connector [4].

Connect the 8-pin connector [5] to P23 on the I/O PCB.

Step 6

Do this step for an EC-400/500 that has the Classic Haas Control:

Disconnect the 300A [1] cable from P41 on the I/O PCB.

Connect the 3-pin connector [2] of the cable [3] from the ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A] to P41 on the I/O PCB.

Connect the 300A cable [1] to the 3-pin connector [4] of the cable [3].

Disconnect the cable labeled VAC SW [C] (not shown) from the cable [3].

Connect the 2-pin connector [5] of the cable [3] to the 2-pin connector [6] from P23 on the I/O PCB.

Step 7

The ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A] operates with the spindle.

It starts when the spindle fan starts. It stops a short time after the spindle fan stops.

Conclusion

Do not discard the filters [1] in the ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A] when they are dirty. Remove the filters [1] and clean them. Use a solution of soap and water.

The ENCLOSURE EXHAUST [A] has a 10" diameter duct connection. This lets you add optional ducting [2] to the shop duct system. The kit does not include ducting.

Be aware: Many service and repair procedures should be done only by authorized personnel. The service technicians at your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) have the training, experience, and are certified to do these tasks safely and correctly. You should not do machine repair or service procedures unless you are qualified and knowledgeable about the processes.
